2006 report from Sinza

Here is the annual report just received from Sinza Youth Peer Educators (Siyope).

1. INTRODUCTION.

The Mission of Sinza Youth Peer Educators in Tanzania is to work with young people, children and oppressed to promote behaviour change through peer health education and transformation development that is community based, sustainable and focused especially on the needs of children and youth. Adhering to this Mission, SIYOPE seeks to keep children off the streets by empowering communities in outlying areas to improve children’s welfare through sustainable intervention that impact education and health.

Fraud warning!

If you've been invited to attend a conference organized by the International Youth Welfare Organization, you may be hoping to get a free air ticket to London and San Francisco.

If so, you'll be disappointed. The conference, whose web site is at http://www.iywo.us.tt/, doesn't exist -- even though it claims to be sponsored by DHL, USAID and Coca-Cola.

In fact, it's an elaborate scam; the idea is to persuade people to make a 'contribution' to their costs by paying $200 for costs in a hotel in London called the Colonad Hotel.

The 'Colonad Hotel' in London doesn't exist, though there is a real hotel with a different name at the address quoted on the IYWO web site. The fake hotel's phone number forwards to a mobile, and its email address to a Yahoo! account.

If you send any money for accommodation in this 'hotel', don't expect to get it back.

The moral of the story: if something seems too good to be true (like a free $1,000 air ticket across the Atlantic), then it probably is. And remember that there are lots of fraudsters on the Internet.

Toa Wigi!

During our site visits to members of the network, we distributed 20 copies of the card game Wig Out, which were very generously donated to us by Gamewright, the company that makes the game. The games were given to the groups that we visited, and to the groups whose members arrived first at the network meeting on 2 December.  Here are the instructions in Kiswahi li for how to play the game.

CISO's report for 2006

CISO has sent in a great report on its activities in 2006.

Executive summary

Community initiative Support Organization (CISO) has expanded her interventions rapidly after realizing support from various development partners including the support from local government at ward level. We have successfully supported 100 orphans and vulnerable children on school uniforms and learning materials. Equally we have extended support to Most Vulnerable Children who are schooling on special education classes at Uzuri primary school in , Kinondoni Municipal-Dar es Salaam. We have also continued to supply school learning materials specifically with messages of reproductive health, HIV and AIDS prevention, drugs to primary schools and youth in Kinondoni municipal. Under this activity we have supplied 1000 copies of the materials reaching at least more than 500 youth We have managed to train 601 youth in Anti stigma campaign based in 4 wards of Bukoba Rural district, these youth were coming from the wards of Bwanjai, Katoma, Bugandika and Katerero . This training was supported by USAID through Pact Tanzania. Equally our organization has 8 Facilitators who were trained under this initiative. Community Initiative Support Organization has also managed to sensitize 60 community leaders on MKUKUTA (National Strategy for Growth and Reduction of Poverty (NSGRP). These leaders were representatives from wards of Manzese and Tandale and other government official working on these wards representing departments of community development, Education, and health. This training was supported by Foundation for civil Society. During this reporting period, our organization has realized the increased income by at least 90% hence making us reach more than 2000 clients that are more than 100% compared to clients whom we were supporting, equally our capacity has increased as we have enough trained facilitators who are ready to support our interventions. The major challenge we are facing for the coming year is how to sustain our organization especially in fund raising to meet our commitment. Page 5 of 18
