Because two of the 30 groups are not getting a grant in 2007, we have $2,000 from the budget to spend in other ways. We are in discussions with a training company to provide some special training to network members, and this would cost around $1,500. This leaves a budget of $500 which we would like to use for a special new kind of grant.
The purpose of our network is to encourage the many groups that are helping orphans and vulnerable children affected by HIV in Dar es Salaam to work more closely together. So the new grant will be a ‘shared project grant’ – a grant specifically to make it possible for several groups to do something together that they cannot do separately.
One example of a shared project might be if one group has a particular expertise in something, it could help two or three other groups start to copy it. For instance, if a group has a good way of creating income-generating activities that will make money to help pay for the support of orphans and vulnerable children, it could help other groups to launch these activities.
Or a group with knowledge of, for example helping children to get birth certificates or death certificates for parents, or helping them get pension money from the government, or helping people getting access to ARVs, could offer to help two or three other groups in the network to do this.
Or a group that knows how to do outreach in the community, to sensitize people about issues of HIV/AIDS or children’s rights by music or dance or paintings could use its expertise to work with some other groups in the network.
If you think your group could come up with a good idea for a shared project grant, then please talk to two or three other groups and ask them if they will work together with you. If you can agree, then the leader group can put together a one-page proposal for the grant. . The grant would cover the cost of the project from $100 to $500.
Ideas should be sent by email to Tim by Thursday 22 February. Earlier is better.
We hope that the proposals can be presented at the meeting on Saturday 24th February. Each team that makes a proposal can have 10 minutes to explain it and 5 minutes to answer questions from other group members. We will then ask members at the meeting to give a score for each presentation that they hear. These scores will be collected by Donatian and reported to London, and the Argentarius Foundation will make the final decision about which project receives the grant.
Because we do not know what ideas there are, the Foundation in London cannot promise that the grant will definitely be given. The $500 may be given as one grant or several smaller grants. This is a new idea, and we will have to see what happens.
If you have any questions, or you want to discuss an idea, please contact Tim in London by email.
